Dr Wilfred McSherry

Wilfred McSherry is a Professor in Nursing, Department of Nursing, School of Health, Science and Wellbeing, Staffordshire University, England, United Kingdom. He has held joint appointments with the  University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, Staffordshire, United Kingdom and was a part-time Professor at VID University College, Bergen, Norway. He has had a career in nursing spanning over 30 years focusing primarily on acute care advocating dignity, spirituality especially in the care of older people and those receiving end of life care. He has published extensively in the field of spirituality and is one of the most cited nursing authors in this area. As part of his early research, he developed the Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale (SSCRS) that has been used in many international studies and translated into several languages.

In 2010 he led on an important piece of work for the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) exploring members perceptions of spirituality leading to the development of the following: Spirituality in nursing care: online resource and the Spirituality in care: a pocket guide. He is currently working with colleagues in the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (South Australia) Branch replicating the RCN survey. He is a Principal Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (now AdvanceHE). In 2012 he was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing for his unique contribution to nursing in the areas of spirituality and dignity.
